Virtual World Orchestra
Old Fruitmarket, Glasgow
April 1997
For three nights in April 1997, the cobbled expanse of Glasgow’s Old Fruitmarket was transformed into an audio-visual arena, playing host to artists and work from over 160 countries. Playing to a live audience and a potential 30 million viewers worldwide watched the simultaneous internet and m-bone broadcasts, Virtual World Orchestra (VWO) was a genuinely global internet event.
A spectacular digital montage of global life, VWO was NVA’s bid to make sense of that which unites and divides humanity, and fittingly crossed all boundaries - national, cultural, political, even generic. The evenings events hurtled from clubland, to installation art, from concert to performance art. VWO proved to be as unparalleled as it was unprecedented.
